Swedish activist Greta Thunberg denounced at a conference in Yerevan that Azerbaijan does not take responsibility for the crimes it commits and receives a platform to legitimize them. According to Thunberg, Azerbaijani activists live without rights, like in a prison. She also criticized countries that continue to buy natural resources from Azerbaijan, a country whose economy is mainly based on fossil fuels, with 90% of exports coming from the state oil company Socar.
During her parallel agenda at the COP in Armenia and Georgia, neighboring Azerbaijan, Thunberg condemned ethnic cleansing, hardships, suffering, torture, and forced displacement of Armenians due to Azerbaijani military aggression. She highlighted that Azerbaijan is executing a "greenwashing" of its image while the world remains silent.
At an event in Armenia, Thunberg criticized COP29 in Azerbaijan, asserting that the country promotes repression and seeks to increase fossil fuel production, which she considers a show of hypocrisy and double standards.
